Privacy Policy

Last updated: April 2026

Who we are

airpollen.com is a global pollen tracking service providing daily pollen forecasts for allergy sufferers. This policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and how we protect it.

For privacy questions or data requests, contact us at privacy@airpollen.com.

Analytics

We use Plausible Analytics to understand how visitors use the site. Plausible is cookieless and collects no personal data — it counts page views and referrers without identifying individual visitors. No cookie banner is required, and no consent is needed for analytics. Plausible is hosted in the EU.

We do not use Google Analytics or any other tracking that requires consent.

Advertising

airpollen.com displays contextual advertising via Google AdSense. AdSense may use cookies to serve ads based on your visit to this site and other sites on the internet. You can opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google's Ad Settings.

We use contextual advertising — ads matched to page content rather than individual user profiles. We do not use Meta Pixel or health-specific retargeting.

Email alerts and subscriptions

If you sign up for pollen alerts, here is exactly what we store and where:

  • Your email address is stored exclusively with our email provider, Brevo (EU-hosted, France). It never enters our database. A database breach would not expose your email address.
  • A one-way hash of your email (SHA-256) is stored in our database for deduplication only. It cannot be reversed to recover your address.
  • Your city preferences and alert threshold are stored in our database alongside your subscriber ID.
  • Your IP address at the time of consent is stored as a hash (not plaintext) and automatically deleted after 90 days.
  • Consent timestamp is stored for GDPR compliance.

All sign-ups require double opt-in — you must confirm your email address before alerts are sent. You can unsubscribe at any time via the link in any alert email. On unsubscribe, your record is soft- deleted and permanently removed from all systems within 30 days.

Pollen data

Pollen forecast data is sourced from the SILAM model (Finnish Meteorological Institute) for European cities, and from the Google Pollen API for cities outside Europe. Full details of each source, its licence, and its storage policy are documented on our Data sources page.

Google Pollen data is not permanently stored in our database — it is cached for up to 55 minutes then discarded, as required by Google Maps Platform Terms of Service §17.3. SILAM data may be retained in our database for historical analysis.

Cookies

airpollen.com itself sets no cookies. Google AdSense may set third-party advertising cookies. You can manage or disable these via your browser settings or Google's Ad Settings.

Third-party processors

We use the following third-party services. Each processes data only as necessary to provide the service:

  • Cloudflare — hosting, CDN, DNS (USA/global)
  • Brevo — email delivery and subscriber management (EU, France)
  • Google AdSense — contextual advertising
  • Finnish Meteorological Institute (SILAM) — European pollen forecast data
  • Google Pollen API — pollen forecast data (non-EU cities)
  • Plausible Analytics — cookieless analytics (EU)
  • Sanity — content management for editorial pages

Your rights (GDPR)

If you are in the European Economic Area, you have the following rights regarding your personal data:

  • Access — request a copy of the data we hold about you
  • Rectification — ask us to correct inaccurate data
  • Erasure — ask us to delete your data (right to be forgotten)
  • Portability — receive your data in a machine-readable format
  • Objection — object to processing based on legitimate interests

To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@airpollen.com. We will respond within 30 days. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

Data retention

  • Active subscribers: retained while subscription is active
  • Unsubscribed accounts: soft-deleted immediately, hard-deleted within 30 days
  • Consent IP hash: deleted after 90 days
  • Pollen forecast data: not permanently stored — refreshed daily from Google Pollen API

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the service evolves. Material changes will be noted with an updated date at the top of this page. This policy was last reviewed in April 2026.
